A team of researchers at Australia's LaTrobe University surveyed 151 people with symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) in the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, analyzing how certain factors, such as age, gender, weight, body mass index (BMI), education level and the duration of their symptoms, may be associated with the range of motion in their toes, severity of their osteoarthritis, foot posture and the flexibility of the big toe.

Authors of the study reported that a lower level of education and a high BMI were independently and significantly associated with foot pain and disability.

"People with symptomatic first MTP joint OA that have an increased BMI and/or lower level of education attainment experience more foot pain and have greater foot-related disability," according to the study report, which was published in the journal Rheumatology.

OA of the MTP joint often leads to the development of a bunion. A study in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research found that the association between body weight and bunions remains unclear.

Whatever the cause of the bony deformity, bunion correction through conservative means may be the best way to increase mobility, reduce foot pain and avoid the risks associated with bunion surgery.
